Rev. Carl Callender grew up in Harlem, New York. He was in and out of various homes since his mother passed away when he was very young. The Reverend enlisted in the military and vowed to himself that he would turn his life around. He became a lawyer, and later, a judge in the borough of Queens, New York. He went into ministry, settled down in Brooklyn, New York and became a reverend and member of Brown Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. Callender is a sports fan and wanted to give back to the youth. He started Ministry In Action (M.I.A.) with his longtime friend Bro. Benjamin Williams in 1995. MIA is a basketball league that preaches about God and allows the youth that are involved in any church to play basketball in all of the boroughs in New York City. Rev. Callender is still acting director of the league. Rev. Callender and Bro. Benjamin Williams invited Gladiator Sports (the first non church league team) in 2000 to enter the league so he could expand the league and open doors for other organizations. The Gladiators never forgot that invite and have played in the league every year. Gladiator Sports welcomes Rev. Carl Callender to the Hall Of Fame. |
